Game Takes: Flames 3 Bruins 2 (OT)

This season isn’t going to end in glory (sorry for the spoiler).

The Flames are in the hunt, especially with another win over the Boston Bruins, a 3-2 overtime win Thursday night at the Saddledome. But they likely won’t find their way to the post season with the number of teams left to leap, and the number of players that are likely on their way out.

But that hasn’t stopped this from being a very entertaining season; even more so when compared to the dreary death watch we saw last campaign.

The Flames received excellent goaltending again from Jacob Markstrom, and an over time goal from Nazem Kadri to post the victory and even their four game homestand at 2-2-0.

Next up the Oilers on Saturday night.

Game Takes: Flames 6 Jets 3

With Connor Hellebucyk and Jacob Markstrom in goal you expected a goalie battle, much like what we saw in Madison Square Garden last week.

Not so fast.

Markstrom gives up three goals on 12 shots to start the game, and Hellebucyk gives up five overall as the Flames rally from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Winnipeg Jets 6-3 on Monday afternoon.

The win snaps a three game losing streak for the Flames and keeps them in that wild card argument but with four teams to pass.

The Flames were led by Nazem Kadri with two goals and an assist on the afternoon; his solid season just keep on trucking.

Next up the Bruins on Thursday night.

Game Takes: Wings 5 Flames 0

Terrible score, but a better effort is my summary.

The Flames didn’t get the save tonight, and didn’t have the finish, but they team as a whole was much better shift to shift than they were against San Jose on Thursday night.

Bottom line is another loss though, their third in a row moving them further and further out of the wild card discussion.

The team has already started selling, but if there was ever any doubt the signal is bright now.

Game Takes: Rangers 2 Flames 0

What is it about the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames in Manhattan?

Last year they played what many felt was the regular season’s most exciting contest. Tonight may not have hit those same levels but it was on the same page as the Flames and Rangers had a spiriting game featuring one of the better goalie battles we’ve seen.

For the Flames, you just have to tip your hat.

Another gutsy performance from a team that didn’t get the memo that their season is over because they’ve traded some key players.

They finish the road trip 3-1-0 and on the outside, but playing some of their most exciting hockey we’ve seen this season.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Islanders 2

Who honestly could have predicted this?

The Flames win their last game before the all star game in a listless Saturday night game against the Blackhawks where they were embarrassingly carried by their goaltender.

So not a lot of folks had a three game win streak in the North East with the same crew minus Elias Lindholm taking to the ice.

But that’s exactly what we’ve seen, as the Flames continued their pattern of jumping on teams early and then relying on Jacob Markstrom to take victories home in a 5-2 win on Long Island this afternoon.

With the win the Flames reeled in another West team, the Predators, and remain a point back of the Blues with St. Louis having two games in hand.

Today the heavy lifting from Mackenzie Weegar who notched his first ever NHL hat trick.
