In a lot of ways the Flames were better tonight against the Washington Capitals than they were in their last two games; both wins on home ice.

But they didn’t have the finish, and for Dustin Wolf they didn’t get the bounces as the Capitals skate away with a 5-2 win on Saddledome ice on Monday night.

The loss puts the Flames within a whisker of being “out of the playoffs” on a pace projection, as they are down the final strike for games left to catch the Knights if the Knights finish the season on their current win percentage.

Dustin Wolf has arrived!

Battling back from a tough start against the San Jose Sharks a few weeks ago, Wolf had some average starts in the AHL, but very much announced his return to the Flames future plans with back to back wins over the Knights on Thursday and again tonight in the Flames 5-2 win over the Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada.

Wolf was the busier of the goaltenders from buzzer to buzzer, and was rewarded with some solid run support from his skaters.

The Flames have now won two in a row, putting to bed that dreary three game skid that had even the most ardent rebuild fans questioning their direction.

Well that’s three laugher’s in a row.

And I don’t think it’s an effort thing.

The Flames are a depleted group; we all know about the five UFAs exiting, but then tonight two late scratches with Andrei Kuzmenko and Andrew Mangiapane both missing for injury and illness.

So the result, a 6-2 Avalanche victory hardly comes as a surprise for a Flames team that is pretty much out of it as they look forward to their last 17 games.

It’s unlikely to get better.

I think we may be saying this a lot in the final quarter of the season … move on.

The Flames got jumped on with the opening face off and never really recovered in getting smoked 7-2 by the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon.

Period leads of 2-0 and 6-1 made this one over quickly, and the push back was pretty non existent.

Calgary was saved by the Lightning taking them for granted or it would have been a miserable southern road trip.

Ugly.

The Flames actually played quite well this afternoon in Florida, but you wouldn’t know it from the final score.

Calgary turns the puck over too often, and were stoned by Florida backup Anthony Stolarz in limping to a 5-1 defeat in Miami.

The Flames move on to Carolina for another afternoon game tomorrow before returning to the Saddledome for a four game homestand starting Tuesday against Colorado.
