Game Takes: Flames 3 Jets 2

Was that a complete game from the Calgary Flames?

It just might be!

Not a sag to be seen as the Flames run out three straight solid periods while receiving a late Elias Lindholm powerplay goal to grasp the two points in 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

The Jets scored the only goal in the first period, Calgary bounced back to take the lead in the second, before the Jets tied it and sent the game to a third all squared.

That’s two in a row for the Flames pushing their record to 6-5-1 on the season, essentially tied with both Winnipeg and Edmonton who are also a game over .500, with the big caveat being games against Ottawa.

Winnipeg has played Ottawa three times, Edmonton four, while Calgary has yet to play the Senators.

Game Takes: Flames 6 Oilers 4

Thank God for Jacob Markstrom, and well, later another Swede Mikael Backlund.

The Calgary Flames absolutely mailed in a first period in a Battle of Alberta no less, but survived in turning back the Edmonton Oilers by a 6-4 score on Saturday night in game one of 10! BOA games this season.

The Flames were awful in the first period, but saved by the third line in the second period with two key goals that spirited the team towards a slump busting victory.

Johnny Gaudreau did the rest in the third period as the Flames snapped the Oilers three game win streak and made the standings a little more tight with the Edmonton and Vancouver losses.

Things were going well for the Flames midway through the second period.

The game was tied at 1-1, the shots and chances were pretty much equal and as a road game things seemed pretty much under control.

Then things unraveled with the final seven minutes of the second period being some of the worst hockey we’ve seen this year, …. heck ever as the Flames gave up chance after chance on unforced errors creating a situation that even Jacob Markstrom couldn’t dig them out of sealing the fate in a 4-1 loss in Winnipeg.

The teams better players need to be better.

Matthew Tkachuk is fighting the puck, he needs to give up on the unseen touch pass nonsense. Mark Giordano is struggling. Too many Johnny Gaudreau turnovers.

With Edmonton on Saturday it’s mirror time.

Game Takes: Jets 3 Flames 2

Not a great start for David Rittich or the Flames as it turned out, but both came on strong making the game much more interesting as the time ticked on.

Three first period goals against for Rittich on 11 shots as his early season struggles continued to some degree. I wouldn’t call any of the goals necessarily weak, but a team on a back to back needs some big saves to find the win column and the first period was a bit of a struggle.

The second half of the second and the third period as a whole featured the Flames getting off the canvas and making the game interesting, the game ending on a great Sean Monahan pass across the crease to Johnny Gaudreau who had the tying goal on his stick, but Laurent Broissoit was equal to the task salting away a 3-2 Jets win on Tuesday night.

The two teams play again on Thursday night, completing the three game set in Winnipeg. The two teams meet again early next week at the Saddledome.

Game Takes: Flames 4 Jets 3 (SO)

And a winning streak …

With a rough go in Montreal, a split due to the sublime goaltending of Jacob Markstrom, the Flames get to enjoy a two game win streak after a 4-3 shoot out victory in Winnipeg tonight.

The game itself though was a complete flip of the script compared to what we’ve seen in the last two games, potentially playing their best 60 minute game of the season.

The win gives the Flames a 4-3-1 record on the season, with two more games in Winnipeg (tomorrow and Thursday) before returning home to play the Oilers on Saturday night.

If the Flames walk that line out more often than not, they’ll be just fine.
