Game Takes: Flames 2 Habs 1

March 11th, 2021 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

There was enough change in that first single game to get excited.

That is until you remember that the Montreal Canadiens had the overnight from hell getting in late exhausted from Vancouver after devouring the Canucks last night.

Every team has tough schedules, the Flames of course having their own share of road woes of late, so you can’t take anything away from a solid defensive effort in giving Montreal next to nothing in a 2-1 Calgary victory. But lets wait until Saturday before we anoint the coaching change with a new breadth of life into the club’s consistency and their playoff hopes.

Yet a first step is a first step. You have to take advantage of disadvantages teams and the Flames certainly had a good deal of tightening of their game and a lot of good signs.

Bring on Saturday.

Game Takes: Senators 4 Flames 3 (SO)

Not sure I’m loving the math all that much after this weekend.

A loss last night in Edmonton in regulation followed by a gut check comeback overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators by a 4-3 score tonight just isn’t what the doctor ordered for a team that would like to be and honestly should be in a better position.

The Flames were a discombobulated mess for much of the first 40 minutes before digging deep and scoring both third period goals to force overtime and secure a point.

But is a point good enough?

Without a good run soon, I’m thinking not.

Game Takes: Oilers 3 Flames 2

The Flames have had a lot of disheartening, disappointing losses this season, but this wasn’t one of them.

Both teams showed up and played a highly entertaining, low scoring, high hit, two fight contest, but it was Edmonton that found that extra push to erase an early third period deficit and win the game 3-2.

I’ve said it before, but more and more I think this league is becoming a superstar league, and when Connor McDavid creates there’s not much you can do. The Oilers were so befuddled in this one that Tippett loaded Draisaitl and McDavid on the same line which effectively made most of the rest of their roster a giant hole, but the skill of McDavid found a way.

For Calgary it was a good effort, and they likely deserved at least a point.

Game Takes: Flames 7 Senators 3

March 4th, 2021 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

There is no point in being negative in a 7-3 victory game story.

The Flames came out quickly, jumped on Ottawa, and didn’t sit on the lead. It was a quality home start for the team as they look to turn their season around and get back into a playoff battle.

But it’s one game.

Fun to watch, lots of scoring, some great signs from the reformed lines and Dillon Dube with a hat trick, but it’s not about this night, it’s about the next one as the Flames have to prove they can do this night in and night out and go on a streak.

But for one night it’s a check mark, and a solid effort.

Bring on the struggling Oilers.

Game Takes: Senators 5 Flames 1

So what excuse is it?

They’re just not good enough?

They’re just not fast enough?

Not in good enough shape?

Not sure what the consistency issue is but it has to stop if the Flames have any hope of getting into this playoff race and making something of this odd Covid season.

Tonight it was absolute face plant in the second period after a promising first twenty that was their undoing with all three key Senator goalscoming in the second frame in a 5-1 Ottawa victory.

The loss brings the Flames six game road trip to a completion with a 2-3-1 record.

Just not good enough.
