Game Takes: Leafs 2 Flames 0

All in all not a bad effort.

The Flames stole one last night so you knew the Leafs were going to come hard tonight, and after a rough start the Flames actually had a decent gut check game and made it interesting to the finish in a 2-0 loss in Toronto.

The game was the most active to date for coach Darryl Sutter who had his first benchings and line blenders of the season.

The team moves to Ottawa to complete the four game road trip with two in the Nation’s capital. Two wins against the Senator and back to back 3-1 segments would sure do wonders for the team’s playoff hopes.

Though we know how things have gone against Ottawa to date.

Game Takes: Flames 4 Leafs 3

Sometimes you lose games you should win.

Sometimes you win games you should lose.

Tonight was a complete steal by Jacob Markstrom as the Calgary Flames skated away with an improbable 4-3 victory in Toronto while being massively out played, out shot, and out chanced.

A circus save in the third will make all the highlight packages, but that was just one of many shots turned away by Markstrom – and many more blocked by teammates as the Flames held on for dear life most of the night.

But it’s two points.

And that’s a 4-1-0 record under Sutter, and a guaranteed split in Toronto before the team travels to Ottawa to see if they can finally figure out the Senators.

Game Takes: Oilers 7 Flames 3

March 18th, 2021 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Darryl Sutter’s Calgary Flames hadn’t faced any real adversity in three games with the old skipper behind the bench.

They got on teams early, played with the lead, and didn’t give it up in stretching out a three game win streak.

Tonight though they tried a different recipe on that included starting on their heels, taking too many penalties, and falling well behind on some spotty goaltending as the Oilers cruised to a 7-3 win at the Saddledome in front of some really quiet cardboard cutouts.

It will be interesting to see how the team responds with a day of practice and some instruction before they travel to Toronto to take on the Leafs this weekend.

Game Takes: Flames 4 Oilers 3

It’s been 15 years since Darryl Sutter coached the Flames against the Oilers.

He’s always pretty much owned them no matter what city he represented, so it was interesting to see if he could turn the tide in this season’s battle of Alberta as Edmonton had won three straight.

And yes of course he could as the Flames led pretty much wire to wire with a huge 4-3 regulation win over their provincial rivals on Monday night. The Flames led 2-0 and 3-1 before the Oilers forced a tie early in the third before Calgary answered back and took the game for the full two points.

The win further compacts the standings in the North Division making the next few weeks before the trade deadline pretty entertaining.

The season felt over. It isn’t.

How much fun is this?

Game Takes: Flames 3 Habs 1

March 13th, 2021 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

On Thursday night, Darryl Sutter’s first game back behind the bench with the Flames, the team was solid in a 2-1 win. The victory came with a lot of asterisks however as the Montreal Canadiens were exhausted with a late game the night before and travel between back to back nights.

Tonight the Flames were equally impressive, and this time with full marks, as they controlled things pretty much start to finish in turning back the Canadiens 3-1 to sweep the mini set with back to back regulation wins.

The four points make the playoff race interesting again, as the Flames now sit just two points back of Montreal with the Habs having a game in hand.

This four game stretch with Sutter behind the bench really felt like the season; I was thinking they needed to go 3-1 or even 3-0-1 if they wanted to get back into it.

So far so good.
