Game Takes: Flames 5 Devils 3

The Calgary Flames just keep on keeping on.

The recipe has been pretty simple. Start on time, get up early, weather a storm, and then get back to solid road hockey and secure the two points.

We saw it in Detroit. We saw it in Washington, and then again in Manhattan but could they pull the same rabbit out of their collective hat in back to back games with their backup goalie in the nets?

Yes they could.

The Flames race out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and had a 5-1 lead in the third before two late Devil’s goals made it a little more interesting, though it was never really in doubt.

That’s 4-1-1 on the season and 4-0-0 on the road trip with the final stop in Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Like the other four opponents on this trip the Penguins are playing good hockey, but that hasn’t seemed to matter.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Rangers 1

What a trip!

The Flames honestly keep getting better and better.

A win in Detroit with a terrible second period against a pretty weak opponent was nonetheless two points. Then a solid start in DC before a second period collapse and a re-correct in the third and into overtime to grab another win. Tonight though no real lapse, the Flames came to play took the lead, added to it, and then countered when the Rangers finally got on the board in a 5-1 win in Manhattan.

The win gives the Flames a 3-1-1 record on the season, which in Flames world is a great start to the season compared to well … every other season. That’s 3-0-0 on this trip, a venture that has had the team score 11 goals in three games.

Game Takes: Flames 4 Capitals 3 (OT)

Sometimes watching a game you figure out the lead, but things change and you’re glad said lead never saw the light of day.

After blowing a 3-0 lead to the Washington Capitals this afternoon in DC the game had that “sure the Flames blew a lead, but at least they got a point” expectation with the Caps having more firepower to trot out three on three.

But never mind … Elias Lindholm takes a Johnny Gaudreau pass on a up the ice pass from Daniel Vladar and buries his third of the night to give the Flames a 4-3 overtime victory, pushing their season record to 2-1-1, and the road trip o 2-0-0.

You read that right by the way … Calgary with four goals on the game. Four!

Game Takes: Flames 3 Wings 0

Wouldn’t you know it … out play two teams to start the season and come up winless, play a sloppy third game of the season and walk away with a shut out victory.

From a Hockey Gods standpoint that’s what you call evening the score, as the Flames beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 on Thursday night, Jacob Markstrom picking up the shut out.

The Flames scored twice in the first period, had a miserable second frame, and then a very solid third in putting away the win, and helping their goaltender bring home the doughnut.

The win gives the Flames an even 1-1-1 record on the season, and starts their five game road trip with a victory. Calgary skates into Washington to play the Capitals on Saturday morning.

Game Takes: Ducks 3 Flames 2 (OT)

This was never going to be easy.

The team was always going to be challenged to score, even if they out played their opponents from pretty much whistle to whistle.

Through two games on the schedule we’ve seen exactly that. An eye popping total of 90 shots on goal through two games but only four goals to show for it and ultimately only one point as the Flames blew a third period 2-1 lead tonight to the Anaheim Ducks, losing in overtime by a 3-2 score.

A little more finish and they win.

A little more puck luck and they win.

But sometimes a lack of overall finishing talent trumps luck and there’s not a lot you can do.

We will see.
