Game Takes: Hurricanes 2 Flames 1 (OT)

It was a great opportunity to learn a little more about the Calgary Flames, the 2021-22 Darryl Sutter led edition.

With back to back losses on the road, the second of which came with a blown lead it was always going to be interesting to see how the team showed up facing a third straight loss, something they hadn’t done all season.

With the Hurricanes in town it was even more of a test, as they to date on the schedule, represent that Spiderman pointing at Spiderman meme in that they are off to a good start, play fast, and are no fun to play against.

So although the Flames lost a 2-1 overtime decision to their visitors, the fact that it was a low event, hard fought game with Calgary coming up a bit short in terms of bounces is a good sign.

Take the point.

Game Takes: Sharks 5 Flames 3

Funny how the game of hockey works sometimes.

The Flames had some iffy hockey in L.A. but won both games; in regulation against the Kings and in a shoot out against the Ducks. Then they had a rough go in Vegas before playing their best game of the four game road trip in San Jose tonight, but losing by a score of 5-3.

The Flames head home with a 2-2-0 record on the four game sun belt trip, and honestly that feels like a pretty fair result if you look at how they played in each of the games.

I thought they were great for chunks of the Kings game, but got away with a rough third period. Decent in Anaheim but gave up too much. Off in Vegas and paid for it, before squaring the karma in San Jose tonight and finding a way to lose a game they should have won.

Next up the Hurricanes on Thursday night at the Saddledome.

Game Takes: Knights 3 Flames 2

They really didn’t have it tonight did they?

They looked tired … a step behind the play, and not on the details that they’ve managed so well for most of the season. Honestly if you look at the three games on this trip they haven’t been fully sharp in any of them, but have two wins and a loss after the 3-2 setback to the Vegas Golden Knights tonight.

The loss moves the team to 2-1-0 on this trip that will see them close it out with a game in San Jose on Tuesday night.

Have to give them credit for making it interesting in the third down two goals twice, but overall this was clearly not their best game.

Game Takes: Flames 4 Ducks 3 (SO)

Back to back nights in the city of Los Angeles, usually a death trap for the Flames in recent seasons.

But tonight after last night’s 3-2 win in L.A., the Flames find a way to win another this time in a shoot out turning back the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in a shoot out after blowing a 3-1 lead.

The Flames got a good push from a new fab’d third line with both Sean Monahan and Blake Coleman getting off lengthy goalless streaks to propel the win.

The Flames are now 2-0-0 on a four game road trip through the West Coast of the Pacific Division, erasing a lot of doubts about their record being padded against the East.

Next up the Sharks on Sunday night.

Game Takes: Flames 3 Kings 2

Darryl Sutter talks a lot about bringing your “B” game when you don’t have your “A” game, and that teams more often than not with effective “B” games tend to do quite well.

Tonight I’m not sure if that was the “B” or “C” game from the Flames, but they muscled their way to a 3-2 victory in Los Angeles on the strength of their second powerplay unit and solid goaltending from Jacob Markstrom.

The win starts off a three games in four nights and four games in six nights trip through the Pacific Division, so it’s a relief to get that rolling with a win.

Next up Anaheim tomorrow night for game two of the four game junket.
