Game Takes: Flames 6 Jackets 0

This is some run.

Three wide margin wins interrupted by a date in Edmonton that had a goaltender steal one and the Flames are suddenly playing their best hockey of the season; which says something.

Tonight it had the feeling of one of those games you regret … the team gets up in shots and chances but doesn’t convert enough leaving the opposition in the game far too long before things go sideways.

But that wasn’t to be the case as the Flames score two late second period goals before piling on in the third period cruising to a 6-0 victory.

The team is dialed in 100% on the Sutter system now, more so then even early on when the Flames were running up wins on Eastern road trips. They’re simply dominating.

Might have to adjust the expectations upward a little for this season; this team could be a tough out.

Game Takes: Flames 7 Blues 1

Well that was something, wasn’t it?

Where was that finish on Saturday night?

The Flames gave up the first goal on Monday night at the Saddledome with the St. Louis Blues going ahead on their first shot of the evening.

It didn’t seem to matter.

The Flames scored seven unanswered goals and completely dominated the play five on five and on their own powerplay in routing the Blues by a 7-1 score and snapping a one game losing streak.

Now their schedule is about to get tighter with three games in four nights starting Wednesday in Columbus.

Game Takes: Oilers 5 Flames 3

Honestly you could play this exact same game ten times and the Flames would win nine of them by an average score of 4 or 5 to 1.

Seriously.

The Oilers scored three seeing eye shots, and then the game winner when an obvious interference penalty was ignored and skated to a 5-3 victory.

The HNIC panel focused on the Noah Hanifin goal as a weak goal on Mikko Koskinen, but the truth of the matter is that Koskinen was the difference both by his save volume and by some pretty good bounces as he made a few saves he didn’t know he made.

For the Flames you just move on, they were pretty damn solid tonight.

As they say … what evs.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Panthers 1

The Flames likely deserved a better fate than the 6-2 loss they suffered in Florida two weeks ago.

The Panthers likely deserved a better fate than the equivalent four goal loss (5-1) they they endured in Calgary tonight.

That’s the game and something often overlooked by those looking in as the Flames were lauded as much improved, bounce back heroes tonight despite needing their goaltender to have a solid night, and having a better than average game in finishing.

Certainly not suggesting the team didn’t deserve to win, but often teams play well and come up short, and then have a game where things go well despite having a hiccup or two in their game.

Tonight evened the recent balance.

Game Takes: Senators 4 Flames 1

January 14th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Nobody knows what’s going on behind the scenes. Some players could be struggling getting over Covid, and doing what they can with their body’s limited capabilities.

Short of that, it’s hard not to be harsh with a team that completely laid an egg against the Ottawa Senators last night, the 4-1 loss the team’s fourth in a row after winning two coming out of the Covid break.

Disjointed. Mental break downs. And a general lack of drive for the most part made beating any NHL franchise difficult.

Honestly reminded me a lot of Ottawa games last year where the team just didn’t show up.

They have a bit of a buffer with games in hand, but that will evaporate quickly if they don’t get back to what pushed them up the standings in the first place.
