Game Takes: Flames 2 Kraken 1

Much like game one on this now nine game win streak, a 1-0 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks, the Flames had to be patient in putting away the Seattle Kraken by a 2-1 score tonight.

Mark Giordano’s return resulted in a great tribute to start, and then a very methodic hockey game where the Flames lacked the finish to cash in on their chances and run the score like we’ve seen in most of the other wins in the streak.

The Kraken were tied 1-1 through two periods until Elias Lindholm extended his goal scoring streak to seven games with the third period game winner, and the game stayed that way through Seattle’s pulled goaltender and some tense moments to finish.

The Flames go for win number 10 on Monday afternoon against the Winnipeg Jets.

Game Takes: Flames 6 Ducks 2

Good hockey teams win games when they don’t have their “A” game.

The “B” game they put forward has warts, they wobble, it’s not a perfect showing, but they dig in and find a way to get points more often than not.

Last night felt like a “B” game with a “A” game final score.

The Flames were on their heels to start the game, but bailed out by Jacob Markstrom, escaping the first with a 2-0 lead.

But from there they settled into a more “A” game type of contest and skated away with a 6-2 win over the Ducks.

The win gives the Flames eight straight both at home and on the season, two back of the franchise record.

Day off tomorrow, then Mark Giordano comes to town on Saturday.

Game Takes: Flames 6 Jackets 2

The just keep rolling and rolling.

Tonight the Tyler Toffoli infused Calgary Flames stretched their win streak to seven games with another impressive win, this time 6-2 over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Toffoli for his part, was noticeable all night and scored in the third before T-Y-L-E-R T-O-F-F-O-L-I chants rained down from the 50% crowd.

Columbus hung around in the first period before the Flames took the game away with their play in the second and third.

That moves the Flames current homestand to 4-0-0 with a game tomorrow night against Anaheim.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Islanders 2

February 13th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Not sure I remember an era (time) with so much day to day consistency as we’ve seen from the Calgary Flames this season.

I’m sure the 1989 team on their way to a 117 point season were pretty predictably good every night, but since then the Flames have been a franchise mired in slow starts, not showing up for key games, not showing up for insignificant games and the like.

This year it’s a recipe and they pretty much follow it every single night.

Start on time.

Limit chances against.

Shot volume for.

Forecheck like crazy.

Dog the puck.

And win … which they did again on Saturday night, defeating the Islanders by a 5-2 score on home ice. That’s six in a row for the Flames and three in a row to start this seven game homestand, a stand that was huge for making up games in hand and using home ice to flex the fact that they got to where they are on the strength of a very unbalance schedule.

So far so good.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Leafs 2

Thank you Jacob Markstorm.

The Toronto Maple Leafs literally ran over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night, but lost the battle of the goaltender with Jacob Markstrom literally stealing one as Jack Campbell whiffed and the Flames skated away with a 5-2 victory.

Midway through the game the Flames were lucky to be tied at 1-1 with the shots 30-12 for the visitors before the Flames scored three goals in three minutes and completely changed the outcome.

That gives the Flames five wins in a row, six of the last seven and 8 of the last 10 as they continue to motor up the Western Standings.

Back to back game exhaustion? Or coming up against a deeper team with speed? I guess we’ll find out.
