Game Takes: San Jose 4 Flames 3

Well that was ugly.

What is it about the San Jose Sharks for the Calgary Flames; their Pacific Division rival has been their kryptonite this season.

Three months ago the Flames blew a two goal lead in the Shark Tank and lost, and they repeated that feat tonight by turning a 3-1 lead and a Johnny Gaudreau penalty shot opportunity into a three straight Shark goals and a 4-3 setback.

The Flames were a little off, Jacob Markstrom was a little off, and with that you can lose to anyone in this league.

Still only the second loss on home ice in their last 19 attempts, and well the Oilers coughed up a lead in Dallas too.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Canucks 2

The Flames were pretty piss poor last night against the Buffalo Sabres.

So tonight it was good to see them, to a man, push back and show the kind of game we’ve seen them play for the most part over the last two or three months.

The Flames came out and stormed the Canucks despite playing on back to back nights, running up a 3-0 first period score on route to a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.

Dan Vladar picks up the win, but lost his shut out bid in the third period.

The Flames were solid offensively after being shut out twice in the last three games, and having their lines jumbled by their less than impressed head coach.

Game Takes: Sabres 1 Flames 0 (OT)

March 19th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

For the most part in this brilliant second half by the Flames they’ve avoided the pitfalls of the trap game, showing up and getting the job done against the league’s lesser lights; the teams they should beat going away.

Last night for whatever reason, that wasn’t the script as the Flames bobbled and fuddled their way to a 1-0 overtime loss to the visiting Buffalo Sabres in a game where every player but the goaltender just didn’t look ready to go.

Jacob Markstrom was able to get the game to overtime with his heroics, and then ironically gave the game away himself on a whiffed puck in the extra frame, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he got his team a point.

The Flames don’t have to stew on this one very long, as they head to Vancouver tonight, to play the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow night on Hockey Night in Canada.

They’d better iron out the malaise.

Game Takes: Flames 6 Devils 3

March 16th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

The dream season continues.

The Flames, a club figured to be a bubble team coming into the season just continue to add believers to the bandwagon both in town and across the hockey world as they rack up win after win after win.

Tonight we hear they bolstered their lineup further with a huge acquisition of Calle Jarnkrok before the game, a move that sent the expected line up spriraling before puck drop.

But no matter, the Flames roll out another methodic, dominant victory against a lesser light, handling the Devils 6-3 on Wednesday night.

Expect we’ll see Jarnkrok on Friday night against the Sabres, as the Flames try to keep the chemistry rolling towards the playoffs.

If you’re young and you don’t remember 1989, this is about as good as it’s been.

So much fun.

Game Takes: Avalanche 3 Flames 0

March 13th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

You have to tip your hat to the Calgary Flames, that was one heck of an effort form a tired hockey club.

The Flames playing game number five in the last seven days on a back to back with travel may have lost the game 3-0 but they had 46 shots on goal and didn’t quit as they threw the kitchen sink at the Avalanche in the third period.

Daniel Vladar was solid in net for the Flames, but Darcy Kuemper was excellent in earning the shut out in a busy night.

That’s back to back nights with a lot of pucks on net, only to be foiled by some solid goaltending.
