Game Takes: Flames 6 Vancouver 3

Under Darryl Sutter the Flames play to roll their regular roster and stay sharp for their upcoming playoff series against one of Nashville or Dallas (yeah calling it).

Tonight, the Flames were text book in limiting the chances of a desperate Vancouver team, and getting it done before their backup and their backup to the backup with Jacob Markstrom in street clothes.

The Flames were full money to be up 2-0, but Vancouver tied it up early in the third before the Flames took it away with three straight goals.

Elias Lindholm joined the 40 goal club, and Johnny Gaudreau passed Joey Mullen for all time best seasons in a memorable night at the Saddledome for a meaningless game for the Flames.

Next home game … game one!

There it is!

The Flames can now officially start preparing for their first round playoff matchup as they clinched their second Pacific crown in four years with a 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

The game, which featured a mile stone 40th goal / 100th point strike from Matthew Tkachuk was another example of the Flames not firing on all offensive cylinders, but still playing the type of team defense that wins a lot of hockey games.

With four games to go on the schedule Sutter can now focus on systems and getting his club ready for what the city hopes is a bit of a run this Spring.

Home ice for the first two rounds are secure.

Game Takes: Predators 3 Flames 2 (SO)

April 19th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Nothing wrong with a three points in two games two game back to back road trip for a hockey club that has already locked down a playoff spot.

The Flames, winners in Chicago last night were playing their third game in five nights and their fifth in seven against a very desperate hockey team, and were able to erase a 2-0 deficit to take a point in a 3-2 shoot out loss in Nashville.

Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk each picked up another point giving them 108 and 99 on the season, and Dan Vladar was solid in the back to back backup start.

Next up the Flames conclude their regular season home schedule with games against the Stars on Thursday and the Canucks on Saturday.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Hawks 2

April 18th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Tough game to get your head around.

The first forty minutes featured about as solid a road game as you could play, text book but against an opponent that wasn’t as strong as the team can expect to see in the first round of the playoffs.

Yet it’s a one goal game going to the third, which shouldn’t have been a problem with how well the Flames were playing.

Instead, however, the team comes out flat for the final 20 and relies on the mothballed Jacob Markstrom to steer home a 5-2 win boosted by two empty net goals.

The Flames got two goals from Johnny Gaudreau, and some support scoring from Blake Coleman and Dillon Dube.

They play again tomorrow night in Nashville.

Flames 9 Coyotes 1

April 16th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

You don’t want to over do a “Flames are back” proclamation from beating up on the down trodden Arizona Coyotes.

They’ve been out of it for a long time, and Calgary … winners of now five of their last six have had those five wins come against teams either out of playoffs or sputtering due to injuries.

Yet you have to think turning a 1-0 first period deficit into a 9-1 pounding has to be some tonic to the old mojo as Calgary got their first and third line going in destroying Arizona on Saturday night.

Just like a recent late HNIC game in Calgary, the “We Want 10!” chant came up empty as it did against Edmonton a month ago, with the team stuck on the nine count, but that didn’t take away from a fun night at the Saddledome.

Next up a two game roadie for the Flames taking them through Chicago and Nashville.
