Game Takes: Flames 5 Sharks 2

December 18th, 2022 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Through their five game losing the streak the Flames were close; losing four of the five while gaining a point.

The common theme though was a lack of goal production form a team that couldn’t generate enough offensively.

Tonight they didn’t blow the doors off the Sharks when it came to generation, but they were ready to pounce on huge Shark mistakes to score five times in a 5-2 victory in San Jose on Sunday night.

The Flames snap their losing streak, and move to within one point of the Oilers in even games, as they look forward to the Sharks again on Tuesday night in San Jose.

Game Takes: Canucks 4 Flames 3 (SO)

Four game losing streak.

Three straight lost in extra time.

The Calgary Flames are certainly taking their time in getting back into the playoff picture in the West.

Tonight it was a rough start, giving up two goals before the game was only two minutes old. From there they battled back, took the lead, but couldn’t hold it as they dropped a 4-3 shoot out decision to their rival Vancouver Canucks.

Next up on the schedule is the St. Louis Blues before the Flames hit the road to California.

Game Takes: Habs 2 Flames 1 (SO)

Usually when you sit down to write a game story you hope you have an angle, that driving point that writes itself that flows off the keyboard.

Tonight we have two.

One Jacob Markstrom is back. To those that thought he was cooked, give your head a shake .. his reset seems to have him back to his game stealing ways we’ve seen in all of his recent seasons. We saw it in Columbus without the result, but tonight we saw the goaltender take it back to his Vezian 2nd spot level as he stole a point for the Flames.

The other hook? The Flames not only take a penalty in overtime for the fifth time this season, they take a double minor only a minute into the three on three frame and kill it off. Or, tying in the two themes, Markstrom kills it off as the Flames secure a point in a 2-1 entertaining loss in Montreal.

The game had more than a lost point though, as the team minus Mackenzie Weegar and Elias Lindholm to start the game lost Chris Tanev with a puck to the back of the head on a Montreal powerplay.

Fingers crossed.

Game Takes: Leafs 5 Flames 4 (OT)

The Flames were pretty much under siege off the hop tonight, taking three (four) first period penalties and giving the Leafs all the momentum.

They somehow survived on some suspect goaltending from Matt Murray, taking the lead three times before running into penalty trouble again and finally succumbing in overtime.

The Leafs skate away with a 5-4 overtime victory on a good bounce in overtime resulting in the Mitch Marner winner.

Calgary gets a point and moves their mini road trip record to 0-1-1 with the final game Monday in Montreal.

Take the point … the Leafs had the Flames on their heels most of the night.

Game Takes: Jackets 3 Flames 1

That was a mess.

The Flames just not ready to play, or looking past their opponents as they didn’t play the game in front of them and instead forced the issue all night resulting in numerous turnovers, breakaways, two on ones and stupid penalty infractions.

Weak mental effort.

If Jacob Markstrom didn’t come to play this one would have been over by the end of the second period, but instead the Flames score a late goal to make it interesting before falling 3-1 on an empty net goal.

Head shaker from the Calgary side.
