Game Takes: Jets 3 Flames 2

January 3rd, 2023 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Talk about rolling out a text book road game.

The Calgary Flames did pretty much everything right in Winnipeg but gave up three leads on the night, and were only able to close the gap two times in dropping a tight contest 3-2 to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night.

The Flames out shot and out corsi’d the Jets all night, but gave up more of the ten bell chances five on five and in the end Connor Hellebuyck was able to out duel Jacob Markstrom for the win.

Earlier in the day Darryl Sutter spoke about the teams analytics, and how they show their own numbers to the team when they don’t get the results. This one might be another example for the dressing room.

Keep rolling out this type of game and you win two of three all the way home.

Happy damn New Year Calgarypuck!

Flames win on New Year’s Eve on the strength of a great start, a solid second period, and then a great third after the Canucks made it close.

The Flames had goals from Elias Lindholm, Blake Coleman and Mackenzie Weegar, building a three goal lead before letting Vancouver squeak back into things.

The Oilers and Avalanche lost in regulation tonight giving the Flames a little wiggle room as they continue to push up the standings.

Successful New Year’s Eve!

Game Takes: Flames 3 Kraken 2

Such an up and down game.

The Flames looked great early, but then let is slide in the first.

They started the second so terribly that Darryl Sutter called a timeout, but then turned it around for the rest of the 20 almost running Seattle out of the building.

In the third they find the game winner, and then do a pretty decent job of shutting down the Kraken and taking the win by a 3-2 score, avoiding a momentum sapping back to back regulation loss to start the post Christmas break.

They played back to backs before Christmas. They played back to backs after Christmas. Now they get a two day break before playing the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night (New Year’s Eve).

Game Takes: Oilers 2 Flames 1

Won’t go over well for the masses, but the Flames likely played their best 60 minute effort of the season in losing to the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 on Tuesday night.

They generated almost 50 shots, had high danger and expected goal metrics at 70% but ran into a hot Stuart Skinner and two goal posts in a game settle by special teams and a third period powerplay goal by Connor McDavid.

The loss moves the Flames out of a playoff spot, and ends a run of points for the Flames.

But honestly if you walk that game out consistently in the second half you likely reel in a few Pacific Division foes and grab home ice in the first round.

Game Takes: Flames 7 Sharks 3

Hockey can be such a wacky sport.

The Flames completely dominate for the entire 60 minutes but find themselves tied 3-3 in the third period and down a man for two minutes with just under ten minutes to go.

Could have gone very very badly.

Instead the Flames get some big saves from Jacob Markstrom, turn the tide and then fill the net with four goals in the final eight minutes to win going away with a 7-3 victory, their second straight regulation win in San Jose.

Just like that they’re even with Edmonton for the final playoff spot in the West, and maybe finding some momentum.
