Game Takes: Kings 8 Flames 2

No doubt about it, the LA Kings are a tough out.

If you were looking at the schedule with 20 games to go you’d probably assign one of those five losses the Flames could afford to a date in LA against the Kings.

Thing is … the Flames have lost games to the Ducks and in overtime to the Coyotes, so they don’t have a lot of room on the bingo card for mistakes.

Tonight a goal off the skate of Anzi Kopitar seemed to short circuit the Flames and send them spiraling to an ugly 8-2 loss in Los Angeles.

Some recent outcomes still have them in it, but the race downward towards an ever lowering playoff hurdle seems to be their only saving grace.

Next up the Ducks tomorrow night.

Game Takes: Stars 6 Flames 5 (OT)

March 18th, 2023 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

You know when the Flames and Stars play it will be a tight, low scoring game featuring all world goaltending.

Last year.

This year it’s 31 goals in three games between the two clubs including tonight’s 11 goal, 6-5 Dallas overtime victory in Calgary.

The Flames were down 2-0 just two minutes into the game, and 3-1 after 20 minutes but fought back to take two leads before falling in overtime.

In a regular hockey game, the point would have been a good story, but the Flames need the points badly and gaining one, while better than none, is a tough pill to swallow.

Next up back to back games in the LA area against the Kings and Ducks.

Tick … tick … tick.

Game Takes: Coyotes 4 Flames 3 (OT)

What more can you say?

You have to win games like Anaheim on Friday night, and Arizona tonight if you want to dig out of a hole.

Sure they played well against Ottawa, but results are results and that’s a 1-1-1 record in a streak where they needed at least five points and certainly more than three.

The Jets lost in Carolina which helps, but a sloppy game in Tempe hurts them badly in the standing with now 14 games to play.

A complete lack of focus and patience for the Flames and they paid for it.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Senators 1

Super disappointing game on Friday night, but with a convincing Flames 5-1 win over the Senators tonight they can say they’ve won three of four which is certainly a positive.

The negative, of course, back to back Jets wins in Florida moving them two points further away from the goal.

Tonight a great night from three Swedes with Elias Lindholm, Mikael Backlund and Rasmus Andersson combining on the first two goals before giving way to the Kadri/Huberdeau line (bolstered by Dillon Dube) to put the game away.

Uphill battle continues on Tuesday night in Arizona.

Game Takes: Ducks 3 Flames 1

So yeah don’t get ahead of yourself.

The Flames completed a road trip sweep on a tough mini trip but that doesn’t escape the season from hell clearly.

Tonight back to the script where you outplay the opposition but just can’t create and finish enough to win the hockey game.

The Flames out shot the Ducks badly but just couldn’t get enough pucks past John Gibson and with that another missed opportunity to get back into the playoff hunt.

Next up the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night.
