The Flames road trip … at least until this afternoon in Detroit was punctuated by solid five on five play and solid periods of strong play.

They seemed to becoming into their own.

Today not so much.

The Flames started flat, and pretty much stayed flat as the skaters and their goaltender had a bit of a rough night from start to finish.

Two quick goals for the Wings, and then from there Calgary stayed within striking distance heading to the third, but were then quickly swept away in a 6-2 Wings win on Sunday.

The loss concludes the Flames road trip at 1-3-1 and has their season record at 2-3-1 with a home game coming up Tuesday against the New York Rangers.

Last year the Flames were money in back to back games, going 6-2-2 on the second night, something that you wouldn’t expect from tired hockey teams.

Tonight, coming off the win last night in Buffalo, the Flames had their starter Jacob Markstrom rested and ready, and he didn’t disappoint in putting in a solid night in the cage.

The skaters couldn’t finish though, as the Flames went down 3-1 to Columbus in game four of their five game road trip.

The final contest is Sunday afternoon in Detroit, where the Flames will be looking to even up the trip and bring it home at .500.

Pretty solid road game from the Flames.

Leading up to this contest it felt like every Calgary game had a “but” involved in the final summary.

Against Winnipeg they won but they weren’t all that good.

Against Pittsburgh they lost but they had a great first 40.

Against Washington they lost in a shootout but they were the better team.

Tonight there were no buts, the Flames were solid in the road and saw their way to a 4-3 win in Buffalo on Thursday night.

If there is any memory the Flames would like to erase from last season it was their record in overtime and one goal games.

Not so fast I guess.

The Flames added a negative tally to both statistics to start the season losing their first one goal game and first extra time game to the Washington Capitals on Monday night after completely dominating the first 30 or so minutes and taking a two goal lead.

A goal and an assist from Calgary native and ex-Flame Matthew Phillips pulled the Caps even in the second, and then Washington won it when the Flames hit a cross bar and a goal post but failed to score.

The road trip stands at 0-1-1 and the season 1-1-1.

Next up Buffalo on Thursday night.

The flipped script gets flipped again.

The Flames were pretty much terrible in their home opener, but found a way to win.

Tonight they had what looked like a perfect road game going through 40 minutes before imploding in the third period, giving up 5 goals in a 5-2 loss in Pittsburgh.

Brutal period and a lot of shaking heads.

But also a big step forward in playing the system and looking like a team that could be competitive this year.

Tough one in Pennsylvania.
