Flames Cuts - October 1st, 2001
The Calgary Flames chiseled their lineup down to 26 bodies on Monday, leaving 23 healthy players prepared to start the 2001-02 season on Wednesday against the Edmonton Oilers.
Five players have been assigned to the Saint John Flames of the American Hockey League, including; goaltender Kay Whitmore, defenceman Alan Letang and forwards Rico Fata, Jukka Hentunen and Jamie Wright.
The announcement is sure to lead to some surprised reactions.
Two players many had penciled into their starting lineups; Rico Fata and Jukka Hentunen, will start the season in the AHL and not with the parent Calgary Flames as expected. Fata had a solid yet unspectacular camp, as he showed a willingness to do the little things, but struggled to show up on the score sheet. Hentunen, a player many had as the Flames 2nd line right wing this season struggled to adapt to the North American sized rinks, and the associated physical play. Both could be seen again before the season winds on too far however.
As with any training camp the startling omissions come along with equally startling success stories, with this year being no different. Names on the roster that few expected at the start of camp would include journeyman minor leaguer Scott Nichol, who made the team with his fiesty play, and consistency. Chuck Kobasew, the Flames 19 year old first round draft choice appears to have made the team though no official word has been released on his contract. Kobasew scored five goals in six games through the preseason, and it looks like he'll launch his NHL career much sooner than expected.
The team that will take the lineup on Wednesday night will be markedly different than the Flames squad that played out the string this past April. New Flames will include; staring goaltender Roman Turek, defencemen Jamie Allison and Bob Boughner, plus forwards Steve Begin, Craig Berube, Chuck Kobasew, Dean McAmmond and Rob Niedermayer. A total new face of count of an unbelievable eight. I suppose nobody can accuse the Flames of standing still after a poor season.
