Calgarypuck Rates the Flames

Position: Left Wing

Five Left-wingers were included in the Calgarypuck Rate the Flames analysis; Cory Stillman, Dave Lowry, Jeff Cowan, Oleg Saprykin and Bill Lindsay.

All five players were also rated in the Sun analysis, but Oleg Saprykin was listed as a center.

It came as no big surprise that Cory Stillman was rated as the top left wing in Calgary, but the fans appreciation for tough Jeff Cowan can also be seen in the study. Clearly Calgarypuck fans have shown support for the free agent acquisition of Dave Lowry, as he placed 2nd among Calgary left wings.

Cory Stillman:

Calgarypuck Rating: 68.5
Sun Rating: 14.5 (adjusted 58.0)
Calgarypuck Average: 3.43
Calgarypuck Minimum: 3.0
Calgarypuck Maximum: 4.5

Notes:

Cory Stillman was the number one rated left wing in Calgary according to the Calgarypuck poll, and placed fourth overall on the team. The Sun poll had well down the list league wide, aligned with players like Daniel Sedin (Vcr), Rem Murray (Edm), and Scott Gomez (N.J.).

Dave Lowry:

Calgarypuck Rating: 62.0
Sun Rating: 12.5 (adjusted 50.0)
Calgarypuck Average: 3.10
Calgarypuck Minimum: 2.0
Calgarypuck Maximum: 4.0

Notes:

Dave Lowry placed second on the Flames at the left wing position, which corresponds to the line he skates with currently. He placed a lofty seventh on the team in the overall poll. The Sun had Dave Lowry at 12.5, which placed him in a position shared with other players like Tyson Nash (St.L), Brian Rolston (Bos), and Todd Warriner (T.By).

Jeff Cowan:

Calgarypuck Rating: 54.5
Sun Rating: 10.5 (adjusted 42.0)
Calgarypuck Average: 2.73
Calgarypuck Minimum: 1.5
Calgarypuck Maximum: 4.0

Notes:

Jeff Cowan placed third in the Calgarypuck poll for left wingers, and a respectable 13th on the team overall. The difference between his minimum ranking of 1.5 and his maximum ranking of 4.0 represented one of the highest ranges on the team. The Sun had Jeff Cowan rated a 10.5, which has him in a similar position to Alexander Korolyuk (SJ), Dave Andreychuk (Buf) and Reed Low (St.L). Who would have thought that a rookie, Jeff Cowan, would place ahead of veteran Bill Lindsay or highly touted rookie Oleg Saprykin?

Oleg Saprykin:

Calgarypuck Rating: 51.5
Sun Rating: 13.0 (adjusted 52.0)
Calgarypuck Average: 2.58
Calgarypuck Minimum: 2.0
Calgarypuck Maximum: 4.0

Notes:

A rare case where the Calgayrpuck and Sun analyses seem to agree. Calgarypuck had Oleg Saprykin at 51.5, which was good for fourth among Calgary left-wings, and 15th overall on the team. Given that Saprykin is ranked fifth on the team in scoring and is a highly touted rookie, his measure from Calgary fans seems quite low in relation to other players. The Sun had Saprykin rated as a center, in a range habitated by other players like Travis Green (Phx), Tim Connolly (NYI), and Michael Nylander (Chi).

Bill Lindsay:

Calgarypuck Rating: 41.5
Sun Rating: 12.0 (adjusted 48.0)
Calgarypuck Average: 2.08
Calgarypuck Minimum: 1.5
Calgarypuck Maximum: 3.0

Notes:

The fact that Bill Lindsay is rated fifth among Flames left wingers to Calgarypuck fans can say two different things. Bill Lindsay is having an awful season; or the Flames are deep down the left side. His overall rating was 22nd on the team, out of a total of 28 players. The Sun looked at Lindsay more favorably with an adjusted rating of 48.0. He was directly compared to players like Adam Graves (NYR), Greg Adams (Fla), Martin Gelinas (Car).
