Saint John 5 Providence 1

By: Aaron McCracken

May 7, 2001

Martin Brochu made 41 saves to lead the Saint John Flames to a 5-1 victory over the Providence Bruins, giving them a 2-0 series lead in the AHL Eastern Conference Final. Brochu made several phenomenal saves and helped the Flames kill off five penalties, including two separate five-minute majors. Daniel Tkaczuk had a pair of goals and led all skaters with 7 shots on goal. Steve Begin, Darrel Scoville, and Sergei Varlamov also scored, while Chris Clark, Marty Murray, and Dave Roche each recorded a pair of assists.

Providence actually got on the board first when Lee Goren one-timed a shot past Brochu on the Bruins' second shot of the game. However, the Flames scored less than 30 seconds later when Daniel Tkaczuk made a nifty pass to Steve Begin, who potted his eight of the postseason. The Flames scored twice on the power play early in the second period, and then twice more midway through the third period to put the game out of reach. Providence had plenty of chances to get back in the game, but Brochu made several terrific saves, and the Flames' defense cleared several dangerous rebounds throughout the game.

The game was marred by several ugly incidents, including a vicious check-from-behind on Rico Fata. The talented sophomore wasted no time in laying a pounding on the culprit, Terry Hollinger. For his part, Fata received 14 minutes in penalties. Doug Doull received a five minute major for clipping and a game misconduct, after thoughtless attack on a Providence player behind the play late in the 3rd period.

News and Notes

  • Chris Clark returned to the line-up after missing one game with a sore back. He had two assists.
  • Doug Doull faces a possible suspension after a "Domi-like" clipping penalty late in the 3rd period.
  • The Flames have outscored their opponents 36-16 in the playoffs thus far.
  • The Bruins power play has not scored in the last eight games.
