Camp Notes: 9/24 --
D'Arcy McGrath
Goaltending is the most important position on a hockey roster in today's NHL.
If your stopper is consistently getting bested by his opponent you don't have much of a chance, especially if budget concerns and failed rebuilding leaves you with a popgun offence.
Last year the Flames received adequate if unspectacular goaltending from Roman Turek and Jamie McLennan.
Both were far from the worst offenders in the team's failed attempt to end six year's of playoff futility, and put the team back on path to better times.
However, no matter how you look it ... they didn't get it done.
This year everything in Calgary is new.
New style of training camp under a new general manager, new head coach and new supporting staff.
This newness has also spread to the methodology of player selection, as many long considered lock spots are up for grabs, or at least to a greater degree than in past seasons.
One of the key battle spots is in goal where four goalies battle it out for two spots.
Roman Turek is the man - that much hasn't changed. His 4 million plus contract all but guarantees him the playing time and accompanying pressure of the starter's role.
Beyond that it's very much up in the air however.
In the past, a look at the contract situation of the contestants would have gone a long way to determine jobs come November.
Jamie McLennan is on a one way deal that pays him $650,000 to stop pucks whether he does that in Calgary, Lowell or Las Vegas.
The other two 'tenders in the mix; Brent Krahn and Dany Sabourin, have two-way deals and the escalation of over $300,000 should they make the jump.
This may not matter this season however, as Darryl Sutter on numerous occasions has refuted the contract as the principal player in the final call for Turek's backup position.
With that we take a look at the performance of each goaltender ....

The Flames have past the half way point of their preseason schedule completing four of their seven games with a record of 2-0-1.
Dany Sabourin has logged the most minutes with a full games worth of action, while posting a 3.03 goals against average and a 0.893 save percentage.
The resurrected Brent Krahn has been a player at this year's training camp, and he too has seen the ice twice for a total of 50 minutes of action. He has a sparkling 1.20 goals against average and a 0.917 save percentage, though he has only faced 12 shots.
The incumbent, Jamie McLennan, has only suited up once thus far for a total of 30.5 minutes, posting a 1.97 goals against average and a save percentage of 0.917.
Odds on Favourite
It's clear from the statistics to date that Jamie McLennan has done little to "lose" his job in this year's camp. At least to this point.
Sabourin has inferior stats in his time in the nets, and Brent Krahn hasn't seen enough rubber to make his impressive numbers register on the impact meter.
With only three games left to play, and a need to get the starter, Roman Turek up to snuff for the regular season, there may be very little opportunity left for the two kids to mount a charge and steal a job.
Fans love change. They love it when a top prospect or unheralded upstart comes in and makes waves.
Don't count on it this year.
