MISCELLANEOUS
Iginla was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, 11th overall. He joined the Calgary Flames in a deal for former team captain Joe Niewendyk, along with Cory Millen in December 1995. Iginla learned about the trade while attending Canada's World Junior camp in Boston. He later finished as the tournament's first team all star at the right wing position. Iginla was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He also excelled at baseball as a young man, playing the position of catcher.
SCOUTING REPORT
Iginla represents the most sought after commodity in the National Hockey League today, the power forward. Ignila possesses a great blend of size, strength and a goal scorer's hands making him one of the league's emerging forwards. After a hiccup in the 1997-98 season, Iginla has improved both his goal and point totals each of the past three seasons, eclipsing the 30 goal mark for the first time in 2000-01.
PROJECTION
Having just turned 24, Jarome Iginla shoud be coming into his prime as soon as this season. He has already fullfilled his projection as a first line, scoring right wing, with the next step - attempting to join the league's elite. Iginla's best hockey is played when he's playing physical, and fully in the game. He needs to find a way to get himself up for each and every contest in order to become of the league's best power forwards.
NOTES2001 Highlights: Named the team's assistant captain along with the now departed Jason Wiemer when Steve Smith retired last season. Secured his first 30 goal, and first 70 point seasons. Missed the team's last five games with a broken hand suffered in a fight with Brendan Morrow (Dallas). The injury kept Iginla out of the World Championships, and may have cost him a tryout with the Canadian Olympic team.
Background: Iginla managed to avoid playing in the AHL, making the jump from Kamloops in the WHL straight to the NHL. Played his first two National Hockey League games during the 1996 playoffs against the Chicago Blackhawks. He scored a goal and assisted on another in those games.
